JONESBORO, Ark. — Hytrol Conveyor Company, Inc. partnered with Arkansas State University-Newport (ASUN) on a career exploration day on February 28.

Fifty students from area high schools visited the ASU Newport Jonesboro campus and Hytrol facility. The students participated in activities that included industrial maintenance, welding, electronic logic controls, and a tour of the Hytrol manufacturing facility. Hytrol and ASUN coordinated the event to demonstrate the technical skills required in manufacturing and the education required to build those skills.

“We routinely teach a skillset. When we get here they see it all go together, the entire process. To see it come together is the best part,” said Ken Beach, associate dean of applied science at ASUN.

Teachers and career coaches accompanied the students. They said events like this help the students plan their futures.

“It gives them examples and knowledge. Students don’t know what all they can do without experiencing it and this gives them that opportunity,” said Newport Career Coach Ashton Madden.

Hytrol employee and current ASUN student Nathan McKinley was one of the event participants. He said that events like this show how involved Hytrol is in the community, and that it also expands students’ knowledge about available career paths.

“This event opens people’s eyes and gives them the opportunity to see what they didn’t know was out there,” said McKinley.

The students practiced hands-on skills during the event, including welding and assembling parts of a conveyor. Riverside student JM Shinall said that was his favorite part, specifying his desire to begin a career in welding.

“Hytrol believes wholeheartedly in the power of education through experience. We prioritize events where students get to tinker with materials and immerse themselves in our technologies so that they build an accurate understanding of what skills and interests various career paths require,” said Natalie Shew, manager of academic partnerships.
