Hytrol Engineers Lead “Girls in STEM” Workshop

JONESBORO, Ark. — Hytrol Conveyor Company, Inc. participated in the Museum of Discovery’s annual “Girls in STEM” program. The event took place July 13 at Arkansas State University. The free program is for girls ages 12-15 with an interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Throughout the week-long program, the girls attend workshops led by female STEM professionals and participate in various hands-on activities. This program aims to show girls what career paths are available in the STEM field.

“We want to empower girls and show them what STEM opportunities are available,” said Girls in STEM Director Shannon Jones. “It is important for us to show them not only what STEM is but expose them to those opportunities in their own communities.”

During Hytrol’s workshop, the girls learned what day-to-day life looks like for a female engineer at Hytrol. They also learned about friction and experimented on different belt types Hytrol uses.

Heading Hytrol’s participation in the event is Design Engineering Manager Lisa Richardson. Richardson has been a part of Girls in STEM since the beginning of the program in Little Rock in 2013.

“I believe supporting Girls in STEM through the Museum of Discovery is an excellent opportunity to bring two great organizations together. Hytrol is a wonderful company, and it is exciting to share our values with a younger generation,” said Richardson. “It is also essential for young girls to see real examples of women in leadership and engineering positions.”
